Top and vibrant living room colour trends in 2025

Breathe life into your living room with the captivating colours of 2025!

‘Colours’ – the word itself sparks happiness galore, whether you are a six-year-old child sketching on freshly painted walls with your vibrant and most colourful palette of crayons, believing you are the legendary Van Gogh and the walls are your canvas (it’s another thing to have annoyed your parents! Trust me, I’ve done that. And, just so that Mum wouldn’t get angry, I’d also write “I Love Mummy” across the living room walls! 😉 Who doesn’t doodle!?), or a thirty-something-year-old thinking of investing in your first home, with the first question that comes to mind being: What colours should my walls be? How do I balance my favourite lucky colours with the living room interiors?

Like I said, colours play a very crucial role in our lives as well as our homes. Home décor is just a collection of decoration pieces put together if the right colours don’t adorn your home! Correct?

Colours have always been at the heart of Indian culture. They play a very important role in our traditions, celebrations, and even spirituality. Take Holi, for example – a festival where vibrant colours are thrown into the air, symbolising joy, unity, and the victory of good over evil. Every corner of India tells a story through its colours, and we have grown listening to these vibrant stories of culture, colour, creations and concepts…

When it comes to interior design as well, colours play a vital role too, shaping the mood, energy, and personality of a space, agree? The right choice of trending living room colours can turn a room into a warm, inviting retreat or a peaceful haven, whatever your choice depends on it. For example, earthy tones like terracotta or mustard can make a living room feel cosy and welcoming, while cooler shades like teal or lavender bring calm and serenity to a bedroom.

Accents are just important too – vibrant pops of colour can add character and positive energy, while neutrals provide a timeless, multifaceted base to play with patterns and textures. Trending wall colours for living rooms also have the power to transform spaces; they can enhance natural light or make small rooms appear more spacious, have you tried renovating your home in this way? By blending cultural inspirations with smart design choices, living room colour trends help bring homes to life, making them not just very functional and useful but deeply personal and full of character.

Let me share a fascinating story about a few things I’ve read in articles while writing for a research paper:

For centuries, villagers across the world, including in India, have relied on nature’s bounty to create their own colours, infusing their lives and homes with hues that carried stories of tradition and their resourcefulness in their most cost-effective ways. Long before synthetic dyes came into existence, rural communities had aced the art and skill of extracting pigments from natural elements like flowers, minerals, and soil, creating vibrant colours not only for art but also for decorating their homes and interiors.

  • Earthy shades of ochre, brown, and red were derived from iron-rich soils and clay. Villagers would crush and mix these with water or natural binders like gum to create paints for pottery, murals, and even to coat the walls and floors of their homes. Did you know?

The smooth red finish often seen on the walls of traditional Indian village homes was achieved by applying a mixture of red earth and cow dung, which not only added colour but also acted as a natural disinfectant. The vibrant murals of Madhubani and Warli art, painted directly onto walls using these natural pigments, were more than decorations—they were a reflection of cultural identity and storytelling. Wow, such imaginary colours created in the most unique way possible…

  • Brighter colours came from plants and flowers. The deep yellow of turmeric and the orange from marigold flowers were not just for dyeing fabrics but were also used to adorn walls and doorways with festive motifs, how cool was that!

Oh, and this is my favourite: Hibiscus flowers were crushed to create soft pinks and reds, which often found their way into patterns on walls or floor designs made during celebrations.

  • Natural stones and minerals also played a role in adding to this palette of natural colours. Crushed malachite stones produced green, chalk or lime yielded white, and charcoal created deep blacks, all of which were used to create intricate designs or accentuate areas of a home. How thoughtful…

These natural colours were not just about aesthetics—they brought a sense of warmth, harmony, and connection with the environment into homes. So, hope you liked my little anecdotal information! 😊 I’ve always been a true passionate reader of our history, culture and heritage, and in doing so, may have picked up such interesting trivia that not always excites me but it’s so fascinating to share with like-minded readers like you! Isn’t it!?
